European Tour Day 13: Soroe Denmark
Day 13, March 14.
I only ended up getting about 2 hours of sleep on the all-night train to Odense, the home of Hans Christian Andersen. First I struck up a friendly conversation with my compartment mate, an American artist of sorts who married a Swedish woman and that’s where he was living, although after he started talking on and on and I didn’t feel like deep listening anymore. So I asked him if we could watch each other’s bags and I went to the WC.
When I walked back into the compartment suddenly I could have sworn he was messing with my bag, which he’d just shoved quickly back under the bed where I had put it, and he looked very sheepish. He gave the lame excuse that I had just caught him picking his nose. I mean, come on!
But I wasn’t worried because I didn’t have anything valuable in my bag. I had brought my backpack with me to the WC, and I’m wearing a money-belt with the really valuable stuff. But no more Mr. Nice Guy.
Then just as I’m settling in to sleep, at two different times two more people come into the suite, which woke me up. And then sometime in the middle of the night from the compartment next to us comes bang, bang, banging on the wall and someone yelling at the top of their lungs as if they were having a nightmare: “death, death, death, death, death, death!!!” Um, pretty weird.
It was hard to get back to sleep after that.
I found out I could take the train to the sleepy town of Soroe early, and I was very happy to do that and get out of Dodge (Odense) as soon as possible, even though Mette wasn’t picking me up for another hour and a half. I could use the settle time.
The sleepy little train station was locked up except for a tiny one bench waiting room and no WC, so I trudged with my bags over into the woods to pee.
As I was walking back I got the most overwhelming feeling of missing Amy, whom I am really not together with while on this trip.
Then I met Mette Louise and her husband Jacob and kids, and then Mette and I had a delightful 5 mile walk-talk around a lake. After that, my legs were hurting and I had to take a nap. Mette is putting me up at her friend, Mia’s tonight, whom I have yet to meet.
