Jack’s EUROTRIP BLOG, MAY 16, 2018
Wednesday, May 16. After three beautiful days at the 3PUK conference, this was another very inspiring day. It didn’t start off that way. No hot water! I couldn’t find out how to turn it on in this Airbnb. I was not about to take a cold shower, so I didn’t take one, which is not good for me. Then, as I went to grab my camera to take to the Serious Youth Violence : A Three Principles Based Community Response event, there was nothing to grab. No camera! I thought I must’ve left it in Lily’s car yesterday. Turned out, Julian sent me an email saying they found it in the presenters’ room. I must have left it there as I was scurrying around trying to figure out what to do with my leftover books and find where they had taken my backpack and my suitcase. So Julian got to Aaron, and lucky for me Mara was visiting Aaron, so she got it from him and drove it down to the event that day, where she was co-presenting with me. Worked like clockwork. What didn’t work like clockwork was getting to the event. Natalie was late getting to me, after being stuck in traffic, and then our Uber got stuck behind a garbage truck on the narrow road. I was a half-hour late getting to my meeting with the UP organization: “Our mission is to work within London communities to transform the life chances of marginalised children and young people who have social, emotional and mental health needs.” The Really nice and committed people—Annabel Bates, the director. Tom Bible. Stuart, a board member. Jacob, their community organizer—who are keen to bring the three principles into their work. Tom had contacted me and I connected him up with Liliana and Peggy. Only Jacob, and two other members of their organization were able to attend this community training day, but the seed has been planted, and I will be working with them to make it happen. The day itself began with Jenny and Dave introducing the Three Principles, then Liliana and I talking about its applications to community work and Modello as the model. After talking about the two primary reasons for violence, and therefore the two solutions, I showed the old Today Show video clip of the Modello project and talked about the four components of successful inside-out community work. After lunch, Mara came in and talked about the wonderful work she and her husband Eirich are doing in a Chicago community, which is so impressive to me. I had donated about 20 Modello books to that project. Then Mara and I together took questions. A really beautiful day with a good feeling attached. After a nice reception with snacks, I was really feeling beat. Tam, the Caius House director, drove me back to my apartment. It was great to catch up with her again, as she had attended our Three Principles retreat last year in Spain and I had recently assisted her with a personal issue that I’m happy to say really made a difference for her. Then I hopped across the street to the first restaurant I could find, grab a grilled chicken to go, and brought it back to the apartment, then took a luxurious bath and just crashed. Great day but I’m so looking forward to just vegging out over the next few days without having to do anything, except meet up with friends.
